Elder Editorial
A reflection from “Dare to Journey with Henri Nouwen” by Charles Ringma Luke 4:1-2 Withdrawal: Purposeful withdrawal can lay the basis for new hope and action. Henri Nouwen reminds us that ‘human withdrawal is a very painful and lonely process, because it forces us to face directly our own condition in all its beauty as well as misery’. In withdrawal we gain space to evaluate and time to reflect. And in that very process we can again come in touch with the good and bad impulses that move us. In that free space we may well come to clearer strategies and a stronger resolve. But even if we only come to a truer self we will have gained much for our journey forward. A prayer… Father God, thank You for meeting us in the quiet places we usually avoid. Withdrawal can feel uncomfortable, even lonely. Yet isn’t that often where truth finally catches up with us? Slow us down enough to notice what is shaping our hearts: the fears, the hopes, the exhaustion, the longing for something deeper. Teach us not to confuse constant activity with faithful living. Jesus withdrew before He moved forward, and perhaps we need that wisdom more than we realise. Give us courage to sit honestly before You. And Lord, if clarity comes, help us act on it. But even if all we gain is a truer understanding of ourselves in Your presence, that is still a gift. Lead us onward with gentleness, wisdom, and renewed strength. Greg Williams | Elder |
