"Speak up for those who cannot speak up for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly, defend the rights of the poor and needy". Proverbs 31:8-9
This exhortation was given to King Lemuel by his mother and encourages the King to use his power and authority on behalf of those without, to be compassionate and others-focussed. Although we don't know exactly who King Lemuel was, the name Lemuel means 'Devoted to God'. King Lemuel's mother's wise words are also applicable for us today. If we are 'Devoted to God' it is good for us to use whatever power, authority, gifting, or resource God has placed in our hands to do as King Lemuel was encouraged to do - speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, to judge fairly, to defend the rights of the poor and needy.
This weekend we celebrate Mother's Day in honour of the mothers, spiritual parents and mother-types among us as well as continue in May Mission Month. I pray that however you spend Mother's Day, whether with family, chosen-family, friends or just reflecting you will draw on the ancient wisdom of King Lemuel's mother and live in a way that honours and shows you are 'devoted to God'.
