Marc's Update

This Sunday, after our morning service, we will be holding a member’s meeting (AGM I) to pass next year’s budget and appoint elders and church council members. It’s an important meeting and I’d strongly encourage you to be there as we make these significant decisions.

Sunday also marks the beginning of the season of Advent. This is a season of preparation; preparation for the first coming/advent of Christ. It can be, as I reflected on last week, a difficult season for us to focus on because we are so often: a) making preparations for everything else that needs to happen before Christmas and/or; b) just trying to get through it all so that we can have a break. These are, of course, not totally incompatible with Advent but can make it feel like one more thing to do: reflect on the real reason for the season. One valuable way, I think, to incorporate the gospel story into the mad rush is to make some purposeful links between the things we are doing and the good news. Remember, for instance, that we give and receive gifts as a reflection of the gift we have received from God in Christ. Keep this in mind when you are out shopping; you are not just buying things but are seeking to reflect God’s generosity to humanity. Others might include the dinner preparations as a reminder of the banquet of God’s people when Christ returns. Or how the symbols of evergreen trees, lights, stars, etc. reflect what we believe about Christmas! Perhaps, by pulling the “secular” and “sacred” closer together we might feel a little less pressure to try to do it all as we prepare our hearts (and homes) for Christmas!

Transforming Prayer – inspired by the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Acts 4:31 reminds us that when God’s people pray, the Holy Spirit moves with power. Yet such power is found not in prayers centred on our own desires, but in an earnest seeking of God’s will. While it is natural to ask for God’s help in our struggles, true transforming prayer happens when we move beyond our personal concerns and surrender ourselves to God’s purposes. In this surrender, we find both quiet trust and a renewed commitment to act as God leads.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
We no longer belong to ourselves but to you.
Use us as you choose and place us where you will.
Send us into action or into suffering.
Let us be lifted up or humbled, filled or emptied, having much or having little.
We freely surrender everything to your will and direction.

O blessed God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—
you are ours, and we are yours.
May this be so, and may the commitment we make on earth
be confirmed in heaven.
Amen.

The Festival of Christmas 2025

The Festival of Christmas 2025

Our Festival of Christmas is just around the corner, and we need your help! This event is only possible through the support of our GBC family.

On Thursday, the lights on the big tree went up, and it’s definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Our Working Bee is tomorrow, thank you to everyone who will be spending their Saturday morning helping make our church look fabulous, preparing kids’ craft and activities, setting up lights, and more!

The Festival of Christmas is happening from the 19th–21st of December, 6–9PM each night! We’d love your help. Whether you can volunteer for one night or all three, or even just a few hours, your support in a small but meaningful role will bring joy and energy to the event!

We need around 50 volunteers each night to make the festival come alive — so let’s all jump in where we can and bless our local community together.

Baptist World Aid: Better World Gifts

Give a gift that gives twice

Do you know a family member who has everything, or a friend who is passionate about building a better world and don’t know what to get them for Christmas?

Consider a Baptist World Aid Better World Gift.

Your donation provides a gift for your loved one that gives twice – providing a valuable resource or gift to someone who really needs it. Better World Gifts are meaningful, ethical, and fun. Each card has a beautiful image which represents the impact of your donation, on behalf of your loved one. All the proceeds from our stationery gifts go to our Where Most Needed Fund. At their heart, these gifts are an expression of God’s extraordinary love at work in the world and how we get to share and be a part of it.

Prayer Requests from Karen Watkins:

I’d love you to pray for patience for me as my body continues to heal, specifically for:
- a gradual return to work - my brain feels “squeezed” when I concentrate too hard;
- ceasing of anxiety symptoms - still present in tingling lips, hands and feet;
- over-stimulation from loud noises and enclosed spaces; and
- lowering my blood pressure to an acceptable rate.
