Davis Prayer update July 13th 2006 Indo summary,  fundraising breakfast and international conference

Two days ago I returned from www.holidayswithpurpose.com having been 9 days on a boat off Nias with 11 good friends. We raised some $7000 for the `Coconut kids club’ and built a kids community centre in Hinako, one of the earthquake devastated areas of Indonesia. We also surfed our brains out and had a lot of fun!

Thanks for your prayers for Ado wedding in bali the other month, some 60 of his largely Hindu friends attended and I had the privilege of sharing the gospel in the service and Gill and I had 4 wonderful days off as our 21st wedding anniversary.

Thanks for my speaking at a reunion of Victoria CS leaders last month, what a privilege, some had not seen one another for 20 years!

Thanks too for prayers and survival of our home renovations!! So glad to finish, just lots of little things to tidy up.

  •  Pray for our fundraiser breakfast on August 5th. We need to increase our personal support $1000/month. We need to raise our airfares for international conference in Brazil in Sept of $6000 as well as scholarships for emerging leaders from third world nations.
  • Pray for auction items to come together this following week. Anyone with contact or something to auction let us know.
  • Pray for so many things to come together in conference organisation, it is a tough time right now as people decide to register and struggle with airfares globally.

Thanks so much.     Brett

What are "Christian Surfers Australia" on about?
Christian Surfers Australia seeks to be a Christian presence and witness to the whole Australian surf community.  This statement can be expressed in the following vision components:

  • To see `Every Surfer Knowing a Christian Surfer’ by networking a ministry around Australia and so closing the gap of opportunity surfers have traditionally had, and then sharing the gospel with them.
  • To include all surfers, regardless of equipment, ability, sex, age, race or creed in our outreach program. In our leadership we will also provide for men and women and all types of riders. God is interested in the surfer more than their surfing!
  • To provide a ministry niche for Christians who are interested in surfing and otherwise may have been idle. We will offer training and opportunities to develop leaders in co-operation not competition with the church.
  • To see us balance sound biblical principles with contemporary application. We seek to be both an authentic Christian mission as well as an authentic surfing mission.
  • To ensure our ’means’ of surfing, clubs, programs etc. never become ’ends’ in themselves. These servants must never become masters and we will see personal gospel ministry as our priority.
  • To persevere in ministry till we see a global expression of God’s desire to reach all nations by networking and developing similar ministries to all the surfing world. We will provide opportunities for world mission.

How does Christian Surfers Australia operate?
We have been a national body since 1983, with individual ministries having started as early as 1977. Today, the basic goals of CHRISTIAN SURFERS are as follows:

  • To present the good news of Jesus Christ in an understandable form to the surfing sub-culture.
  • To provide an alternative to the regular surfing scene, a scene which attracts, and often misleads, so many Australian youth.
  • To act as a servant to the local church by:- acting as a `halfway house’ between the beach and Church; offering specialist resources and personnel; helping Christians find a ministry `niche’ through the unique opportunities for ministry C.S. provides.

These aims are primarily achieved through numerous local "Christian Surfers clubs" which are backed by a variety of most mainline Churches. We also seek to support `Partners in Ministry’ - individuals who may not be able to form a club structure but wish to minister in the surfing community.  Christian Surfers has been regionalised with each region having a co-ordinator and various regional support activities for leaders and outreach.  Local club programs consist typically of meetings and Bible study; surfing contests, camps, coaching, day trips etc.  Both men and women are involved in most clubs and we include surfers and bodyboarders.  We seek to minister to the whole person.

Accountability is through the covering local Church, the full time National Coordinator (since 1984) and Executive and the Regional Co-ordinators - a local `core-group’ of leadership.

Christian Surfers Australia have:

  • a common logo
  • a national newsletter `INSIDE’
  • a Constitution
  • an annual National Conference
  • a Training Strategy and manuals
  • a wide variety of tracts and other resources

There is a definite affiliation by each local club to the Australian movement.

Christian Surfers are a member of the `Network of Australasian Youth Missions’ (NAYM) seeking to reach the youth of Australia together.

`Christian Surfers Australia’ is also a member of `Surf Ministries International’ which is a fellowship supporting similar works and individuals overseas in countries such as the U.S.A., New Zealand, Mexico, Chile, Tahiti and South Africa with an aim of contributing to world mission.

Personal membership varies from club to club, but C.S. is open to all.  There are primarily two levels of membership:

  • AFFILIATED OR SOCIAL MEMBERS (who may not necessarily be Christian)
  • FULL MEMBERSHIP (where members are more tightly screened)
