Learning for Life
General Objective of Project Children in Ethiopia are required to have basic literacy and numeracy skills before enrolling as grade 1 students. However, many children from the rural areas of Ethiopia lack these basic skills as many of their parents are illiterate themselves or do not have the time to teach their children. This results in many children being denied entry into the formal education system, or children drop out early as they are unable to keep pace with their peers. Since 2005, TEAR Australia has been supporting the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Churches (EKHC is the largest evangelical church in Ethiopia, 6.7 million members in 7,774 churches). The EKHC has been currently facilitating a child literacy and numeracy program in 155 EKHC churches. Of the 47,379 children attending the program 80% of the children have successfully completed the program and transitioned into government schools in their home area.
Expected Outcome of the Project The EKHC have proposed to continue the program from 2011-2013 expanding into the Southern Regional State of Ethiopia. Our funding will increase the number of churches involved to 260 EKHC churches. Therefore with our funding the following can take place:
