Water Wells for Southern Sudan
Project: Water Wells for Southern Sudan Agency: SIMAID Target: $30 375 (Tax Deductible)
Total Raised: $46 946
The 2005 Peace Agreement has given millions of southern Sudanese the security to return to their homelands. After decades of civil war their villages are nothing more than rubble and everything needs rebuilding. SIM is providing:
-
safe drinking water in 5 villages
-
a Christian college
-
a clinic and health training centre
-
training for church leaders
Providing safe drinking water is fundamental to the other project components. Safe water to Thiangrial was delivered in 2007 and funding is sought from GBC to provide water to 3 of the 4 remaining villages.
Caption 1: Plenty of water can be taken from the Nile which runs through southern Sudan, but drinking it comes with a high risk of disease and death due to the abundance of bacteria and parasites.

Project Update
Portable Water Purification System in Yabus Sudan
Ryan Weekes - Water Engineer, purifying the roof water. This portable purification system is funded by Gymea Baptist Church.

As you can see, an important part of any development work is to consult, involve and train the people who will be using it.

Hand-pumped groundwater bores have been installed in and around Doro Sudan

Atar Water System
Water is pumped from the river into the top tank with a pump operated by people power – it works like a stairmaster so it doesn’t require fuel. The water is purified in the top tank and an hour later transferred to the bottom tank… which is basically a cold water urn.

Students from the Adult Education Centre were taught how to assemble and operate the system. Now the compound, school, and some members of the community are enjoying clean water from the system. A good bonus was that we were able to use the pump for irrigation and agriculture within the compound.
